The San Diego State University in collaboration with the University of California,
San Diego and the San Ysidro Health Center, Inc is conducting an exciting study
called Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos HCHS/SOL. This is an
epidemiologic (cohort) study where participants will be followed annually to
study their health status. The project is sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute
(NHLBI) and six other institutes, centers, and offices of the National Institutes
of Health (NIH).
Project goals include studying the prevalence and development of disease and health conditions in
Hispanics/Latinos, the role of social and cultural factors in health, and to identify risk factors that
play protective or harmful roles in Hispanics/Latinos.
Study participants aged 18-74 years will be randomly selected to participate from the southern region of San Diego. They will complete an extensive clinic exam and assessments to determine health conditions and cardiovascular risk factors. The goal is to screen 4000 participants from the South Bay area of San Diego County. The San Ysidro Health Center the lead community partner and provides a link with other community agencies and also facilitates access to health care services for those study participants that don’t have health insurance or do not have enough benefits.
